We teamed up with Skywest and Virgin Australia to provide engineering maintenance support for its ATR fleet.
When Skywest was looking for an experienced aircraft engineering and maintenance company to provide support for its ATR Virgin branded fleet, Toll was the company of choice.
The ATR 72-500/600 areoplanes are assembled in France, with the fuselages produced in Italy, the wings in Bordeaux, France and the PW127M engines in Canada. These components are shipped by both land and sea to their final assembly and finishing line.
Toll is an experienced maintainer of ATR aircraft in Australia. Drawing upon existing dedicated ATR 42/72 engineers and by conducting conversion courses in both Perth, Australia and France for other experienced and qualified staff, Toll was able to support this European endeavour with its maintenance support experience.
In June 2011, a Toll licensed engineer, a Skywest airlines maintenance controller, a finance representative and ATR technical and quality assurance staff documented to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority the compliance of the ATR 72-500 type series to stringent Australian safety regulations.
The first two aircraft were ready for delivery just a week apart. With the assistance of additional Toll licensed engineer Chris Turley, both the aircraft undertook the four day, 22,000km journey from France to Australia via Turkey, UAE, India, Malaysia and West Timor.
Subsequent round the clock efforts by Toll Aviation management, licenced aircraft maintenance engineers and other tradespeople at the Brisbane engineering airport facility saw the aircraft ready for service.
Virgin Australia and Skywest Airlines were awarded their Air Operations Certificate with the ATR 72 aircraft successfully entering commercial revenue service in October 2011.
The third ATR was delivered to Brisbane via Egypt, UAE, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, and flew nonstop from Perth to Brisbane for its final leg. The fourth arrived at the end of 2011 and subsequent aircraft arrived throughout 2012, continuing the maintenance service provision by our dedicated Toll Aviation teams.
